A colorful painted elephant design on edible paper with blue and purple stripes on a vibrant background

You might just fall in love with your edible art project and not want to eat it.

Since I got into the competitive cake world in 2010, I have been amazed at the technological advances that have been made in edible art. A wide variety of new, mind-blowing products have been produced by research-and-development departments across the planet.

I’m lucky because I’m friendly with a lot of these folks. And when they come up with something new, they often send it to me for a test drive. The fact that we’re all basically stuck indoors these days has given me the time I need to experiment, and it has resulted in some beautiful artistic ideas that I can pass on to you.

Hence, this edible elephant.

Sterling Pearl : Edible colors

Deborah Coughlin, my friend over at Icing Images, recently got me into SmArt Sheets (yes, that’s how it’s spelled)—a sugar-based edible paper that can be painted so it looks like fabric. Playing around with a SmArt Sheet and a set of Sterling Pearl Edible Paints—courtesy of the Sugar Art—I came up with a kind of psychedelic elephant that can make for a fun family project.

Of course, you’re free to choose whatever materials you’d like to work with. Draw and paint whatever picture you’d like! The techniques you’ll find in this tutorial can be applied tos almost any painting project, edible or otherwise. But if you’re a purest and want to do what I do, the supplies for the edible elephant can be ordered online here:
